Our Mission

California Liver Research Institute is a non-profit organization focused on the advancement of treatment and management of liver diseases. Our commitment is to expand and improve the knowledge of liver diseases and novel therapies, as well as to deliver quality patient care.

As a single center, the average time to start up a study is shorter, and your will get timely responses to your inquiries

We conduct our own investigator's initiative studies, to address different liver diseases affecting communities in LA.

On site we have capacity to store frozen samples, centrifuge, FibroScan and laboratory.

Dr. Edward Mena, a renowned hepatologist of Los Angeles county, is the president and CEO, as well as principal investigator.

Meet the Team

Dr. Edward Mena


President and CEO of California Liver Research Institute

Dr. Mena is the President and CEO of California Liver Research Institute (CLRI). Dr. Mena received his Bachelor of Science from UCLA and his Medical Degree from USC Keck School of Medicine. He serves as the Principal Investigator on all of our studies. Dr. Mena is a leading Hepatologist in the area and is the Medical Director of Pasadena Liver Center. He has over 20 years of experience and is dedicated to further research on all aspects of liver disease, including better ways to diagnose and manage liver damage. Dr. Mena has been proudly serving the Los Angeles community, which has earned him public recognition and the following awards:

- Hispanic Health Leadership Award by the National Hispanic Health Foundation.

- Health Care Visionary by the American Liver Foundation

Roberta Fitzgerald - RN

Study Coordinator

Roberta is a registered nurse with + 35 years of experience. She has worked in human clinical trial research for about 25 years.

Stephanie Tang - Site Director

Stephanie is responsible for managing all operational and business development aspects of California Liver Research Institute. She enjoys working closely with the CLRI team to identify new opportunities and trials to provide the best resources and options for all patients with liver disease.

Research Assistant

Medical Assistant. Committed to delivering excellent patient care with +15 years experience. I am Fibroscan 502 Touch certified and primary operator in our office. I am proud to be apart of CLRI family since June 2017.

Iman Jomaa - PA-C

Sub-investigator

Iman Jomaa is a Physician Assistant and works with Dr. Mena to treat all patients with liver disease. She is focused on treating liver disease and has worked with Dr. Mena for several years, caring for and treating every patient that comes to the clinic. Iman is a Sub Investigator on CLRI's clinical trials.

Misty Guillen - LVN

Study Coordinator

Misty is a Licensed Vocational Nurse certified in IV therapy and blood withdrawal and serves as our Lead Study Coordinator. She has over 10 years of research experience in various roles of study execution. She has conducted studies in all phases from Proof of Concept studies (Phase 0) to Phase IV (Post Market trials)

Dr. Fabiana Pacheco - MD

Recruiter

Dr. Pacheco serves as CLRI's recruitment specialist. She is responsible for creating our patient databases as well as Pre-Screening of subjects. In most cases, she will establish initial contact with the potential subjects to evaluate appropriateness for each study.

Jennifer Moani Kahau-Segovia - RN, APRN, FNP-C

Sub-investigator

Moani is a Registered Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner who is working with Dr. Edward Mena to treat and diagnose patients with liver disease. She sees patients in Dr. Mena's private practice and serves as a Sub Investigator on CLRI's clinical trials.
